Johannesburg
Arrive at OR Tambo International Airport. We recommend visitors stay in the exclusive Sandton City suburb, today the financial hub of Southern Africa where you are within walking distance of the finest shopping centres in Africa including Sandton City and Mandela Square.
A visit to Gold Reef City, a former working goldmine dating back to 1886 is most interesting. Go fourteen levels down the goldmine, watch gold being poured, and experience life during the days of the gold rush. Close by is the architecturally interesting Apartheidsmuseum, packed with thoughtful, though often brutal, reminders of South Africa’s history.
Alternatively the Cradle of Mankind at the Sterkfontein Caves beckons you to step back three million years in time when our ancestors roamed the African Savannah. The nearby Lesedi cultural village enables the visitor to learn more of the village life of the Zulu, Ndebele, Sotho and other local tribes and the traditional dishes and tribal dancing are highly recommended.
Just 40 minutes driving from your hotel is Pretoria, the capital city, with its vast number of jacaranda trees, a wonderful sight in springtime. Visit the imposing sandstone Union Buildings where the president has his office. The Voortrekker Monument off the R28 provides a shrewd insight into the often violent past of South Africa. |
