Namibian Horizons

12 nights, 13 days.
Price range: From US$2210 pp sharing.

Namibia, once a German colony, is known as "The ageless land", a vast country of intensely contrasting landscapes where dinosaur footprints, pre-historic rock art, the ancient fossil plant, the Welwitchia mirabilis and the ochre-painted and unique desert tribe, the Himbas, are to be found. There is not only the desolation of the oldest desert in the world, the Namib with its beautifully coloured sand dunes and Sossusvlei, its famous salt pan, but also the awe-inspiring Fish River Canyon, the rugged mountains of the central plateau, the great plains of the Etosha Pan and the lush green riverine growth of the Caprivi. The low population density of the country and its wide horizons contribute to a unique destination in an ever more crowded world. This is a holiday that is completely different from anything you may have experienced before.

Included: All accommodation and breakfast; dinner at Sossusvlei Lodge, Vingerklip Lodge, Palmwag Lodge, Namutoni; Lunch at Namutoni; Park entrance fees; Toyota Yaris sedan with unlimited mileage and super insurance cover.

The Namib’s spectacular sand dunes

Day 1 & 2 Windhoek & Sesriem
Drive from Windhoek to Sesriem, the closest overnight stop which allows you access to the famous Sossusvlei. Today explore the dune wonderland that is Sossusvlei and the Sesriem Canyon. Climb Dune 45, one of the highest sand dunes in the world and practise your photography where the trees at Dead Vlei make magnificent photos, casting jagged silhouettes against the velvet textures of sand.
Day 3 & 4

Sesriem & Swakopmund
After breakfast, depart for Swakopmund, via the Kuiseb Pass and arrive in the afternoon. Swakopmund's appeal lies in its buildings - one of the world's best preserved examples of German colonial architecture. The world's largest open-cast uranium mine, Rossing Mine, is near the town.
The next day provides the opportunity to participate in activities offered in and around Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. Take a trip to the Moon landscape, a totally barren, undulating, rocky desert which was formed by the valleys of the Swakopriver and view the Welwitchia plants, also known as the living fossil plant.

Day 5

Swakopmund - Khorixas
Today you drive north via Henties Bay and Uis to your next destination - Khorixas - the traditional capital of Damaraland, which lies close to some of Namibia's most curious stone formations, ancient rock engravings and strange geological phenomena.

Day 6

Khorixas - Palmwag
En route to the surprisingly luscious oasis of Palmwag you drive past a petrified forest and stop at Twyfelfontein, renowned for some of the best examples of Bushman paintings and rock engravings in southern Africa.

Day 7 Palmwag
The full day to explore the area around Palmwag. You can choose to drive to the desert looking for the elephants who have adapted to the conditions here. Enjoy these spectacular surroundings which harbour the rare black rhino, giraffe, zebra, gemsbok and many other wild animal species and then sit back and marvel at the incredible sunsets.
Day 8, 9 & 10

Palmwag & Etosha
Drive to this unique national park and overnight at Okaukuejo, a camp next to a brightly-lit waterhole guaranteeing 24 hours of game viewing. Experience how predator and prey share this precious commodity in a barren world. Continue your safari by driving towards Namutoni, the north eastern camp, with lunch halfway at Halali. Here too you can relax and watch the animals coming down to drink at the camp's waterhole.

Day 11 Etosha & Waterberg
Drive south towards Otjiwarongo and overnight at a lodge near the Waterberg National Park, at the foot of the majestic Waterberg Plateau. Once a battleground, this area is now a sanctuary for rare and endangered species such as the white rhino, roan and sable antelope, and the vulnerable Cape vulture.
Day 12 Waterberg & Windhoek
Today you depart from Waterberg and head for Windhoek via Okahandja, an important centre for woodcarvers from the north.
