West Coast Flower Magic

10 nights, 11 days
Recommended months: August to September
Price range: From US$960 pp sharing.

From July to September, Namaqualand, the semi-desert region of the Cape West Coast, is covered in a blanket of flowers, and is recognised as one of the world's greatest natural wonders. Winter is low season in Cape Town and a wonderful time to explore its many attractions. A three night stay in Cape Town is highly recommended either before or after your visit to the West Coast flowers.

Day 1 CAPE TOWN
Arrive at Cape Town International Airport and drive to your hotel in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Relax while you savour the leisure, culinary and scenic attractions of this wonderful setting in the shadow of Table Mountain.
Day 2 - 7 NAMAQUALAND
Spend the next few days exploring this amazing flower kingdom. Start off in Vredendal, the main town of the Olifants River region, where you will find the largest wine cellar under one roof in the Southern Hemisphere. As you continue towards Springbok, your northernmost destination, the flowers stretch beyond you in a profusion of white, orange, purple and yellow. Truly nature gone wild. Relax in the early mornings as the flowers open as the sun warms. Take the opportunity to visit the famous bulb town of Nieuwoudtville before reaching Calvinia. The farm Matjesfontein, established in 1709, is the setting for further flower viewing. The last day of the Namaqualand visit is spent in Saldanha, a famous harbour and fishing town, which is also home to a large water bird reserve and where you will spend the night.
Day 8 CAPE TOWN
We suggest a seafood lunch at the famous Strandloper, an open air restaurant on the beach at Langebaan en route to Cape Town. Overnight in the V&A Waterfront.
Day 9 & 10 CAPE TOWN
Enjoy this city's myriad attractions: visit Kirstenbosch National Gardens with its 9000 plants species, go up Table Mountain in a revolving cable car for an unforgettable panorama of the city, take a trip to Cape Point, the southwesterly tip of Africa, or enjoy the antics of the penguin colony at Boulders Beach. A boat trip to Robben Island, prison of Nelson Mandela for 18 years, will leave an indelible memory. And be spoilt for choice of restaurants, wine bars and beaches. Shop at Canal Walk, one of the world's most luxurious shopping centres en route to a visit to one of the many wine estates in Stellenbosch, 30 minutes east of the city.
